Basic Canine Hygiene

Tonight I wanted to give a couple tips on basic Canine hygiene, just  a couple real easy tips to remember.

1.) Keep your pets nails trimmed.  Each nail has a “quick” or vein that runs through it.  If you dont keep the nails trimmed to the “quick”  it will actually grow longer with the nail.  If the “quick” gets too long, you wont be able to trim the nails back as far.  Keeping the nails short and clean helps to prevent difficulty in walking for your pet, as well as protecting your floors.

2.) There is no need to bathe your pet more than once a month.  Often times you don’t even need to do it that often.  Bathing too often can cause dry skin and irritation.  Use a shampoo that has aloe and oatmeal to soothe the skin.

3.) Brushing your pets teeth, while difficult can be important for their health.  If you can train your dog or cat for that matter to accept it, it could help to prevent gum disease as well as helping keeping you from needing to get a dental done at your local vet.  They can cost anywhere from $300-$500 .

4.) If you have a dog prone to ear infections, clean their ears weekly with a product like Epi-Otic.  It will work great for keeping their ears clean and gunk free if done regularly.
